Loki: Pagan God in Viking Mythology

The role of the Viking God Loki in Norse mythology can be described as complex and multifaceted. Sometimes said to be the herald of chaos and change, Loki is at the same time an ally and enemy of the Asgardians. Loki is the son of Jotuns (mountain giants) Farbauti and Lauwei, which already indicates his amphibolic nature he seems to belong to both worlds: gods and giants.

The symbolism of Loki

Change and Chaos

Loki is presented as a God of chaos and change. His actions and plans cause the breakdown of existing orders instead of their restoration. His transformations and magical skills (the outstanding transforming ability) stress his nature as a changeling and a disruptor.

In Ancient mythology, Loki represents duality. The Trickster God can benefit the gods while simultaneously acting as an antagonist.

Creativity and Destruction

Some people associate the God of mischief with creativity and on the same note, he is viewed as a destroyer. He aids the gods, whether by providing solutions to a problem or accomplishing a task, but at the same time, he brings confusion and issues as well.

Interplanetary Role

Loki is not an “evil” god. In Paganism, he has a symbolic meaning linked to the balance existing in the world. This shape-shifting ability and deception preserve this balance, though it is synonymous with chaos.
