Who is Idunna?
Idunna is a pagan Scandinavian god from Norse mythology associated with the eternal youth and immortality of the gods belonging to Asgard. She is also their chief nutritionist, as when she stops providing them with her apples, the gods age. That is in the myth where she is abducted by the giant Týr, which creates strife among the gods as they lose potency. Idunna expires, and restoring her becomes a very important task; Odin’s guile brings her back. Two myths about Idunna show the importance of this goddess concerning the sustenance of gods’ eternality.
What does Idunna look like
To be precise, Idunna is portrayed in dresses typical for Scandinavian goddesses or women of those days; sometimes, she is depicted as having apples. Her link with the apples of youth is often emphasized, and she holds a basket or similar receptacle with these miraculous apples, which she preserves. These apples link her back to her central position in the myths. Indeed, as the goddess of fertility and immortality, Idunna’s images relate primarily to her stunning appearance through which she gives youth and life to gods. Also, the artistic recreations would depict objects associated with nature, like trees and flowers, signifying her connection to life and rebirth.
It seems that the Vikings were quite attached to Idunna’s character because she provided the deities with the main sustenance: life and youth.
