“People create gods when they wonder why things happen. Do you know why things happen? Because gods make them happen. Do you want to know how to make good things happen? Be good to your god. You give a little, you get a little. The simplicity of that bargain has always been appealing. That’s why you’re here, precisely why I matter.” Nail Gaiman, “American Gods”.

What is Godfather’s name?

How many names does the one who heads the pantheon have? Say one name now - and others will not understand. The world is changeable and chaotic, but everyone will hear only one word – Odin, Viking god. Wotan in ancient Germanic dialects, the All-Father in Scandinavian manuscripts, and Grimnir, found in Ireland and Saxony – how much they mean for world culture. The supreme god of Norse mythology is respected for his wisdom and desire for knowledge.

The name "Odin" comes from the Proto-Germanic word "Wodanaz," meaning "fury" or "madness." This reflects Wotan's aspect as the former god of war, battle, and madness, where warriors invoked him for his strength and bravery in battle. Some berserkers applied the symbol of the head of the Viking god with the blood of an animal to their faces to receive the strength and blessing of God in the coming battle.

Odin’s wooden statues

Wooden statues of Odin were usually carved from sacred trees or logs, such as oak or ash, which were thought to embody spiritual qualities. The craftsmanship of these idols varied, but in general, they were meant to reflect the essence and characteristics of the deity they represented. Wooden statue of Pagan god was used in religious ceremonies, including sacrifices, prosperity, and protection rituals, and during seasonal festivals such as Yule (winter solstice) and Midsummer (summer solstice). These idols were believed to serve as conduits between the mortal world and the divine realm, allowing believers to communicate with and honor Pagan. Such rituals became the center of Scandinavian mythology, reflected in the visual and musical arts.

One could often find wood carving Altar sculptures of All-Father near the house of a jarl or king. It was believed that only the strong and wise were given the right to manage the welfare of others.

A gold pendant from the fifth century A.D. was discovered in Denmark with the earliest known inscription honoring the Norse deity All-Father. Wotan appears in the earliest known writing on a gold necklace recently found in Denmark.

Strength and wisdom through history

Many in Scandinavia and worldwide believe in small idols' power. Some have them on the chest of drawers. Others have them in the hallway and built a small altar. Isn't that what you wanted: a decorative element that helps maintain faith in miracles?
