Kali

Kali is one of the principal wives of Shiva and is regarded as the focal aspect of the Devi, the Supreme Goddess. The element of the feminine is represented by fire; she is destruction and change, signifying the changes that have to be made. Kali’s depiction includes four hands, and the objects they hold may consist of a sword or a skull; her depiction also contains features associated with death, as this goddess represents destructive and creative aspects.

This manifests in the usage of the color black or blackish blue in her depictions, where black connotes infinity during power. Kali seems terrifying with black skin, long sharp teeth, and one neck, but she is on the side of righteousness, helping her devotees free from diseases, evils, and misfortune, targeting only the evils. Her worship in different parts of India includes rituals of invocation and purification, such as Kali Chaudas and Durga Puja, thus highlighting her dynamic role in life and death.

Kali statues

Many worshiped statues and figurines of Kali are in practice in Hindus. These representations are essential in the worship and rituals related to Kali and can be observed in temples, in people’s houses, and on feasts. Kali is typically portrayed as having four or ten arms and hands that hold such things as a sword and a human skull. Other features present in the picture are those that are relative to her ability and role in destruction. These statues can be cast in metals, stone, and clay, among others, and they can be tiny figures and giant temple icons.
